theatlantic:

theatlanticvideo:

We got a killer view of NASA’s Discovery hitching a ride on a Boeing 747 from the roof of the Watergate. It’s crazy looking! Here’s how the shuttle ferry flights work.

Yep, this is still awesome.

I’m going to say this is definitively NOT AWESOME: space exploration is expensive, really only possible for the governments of affluent nations and insanely wealthy multinational corporations, and the end of the space shuttle program means the end of public exploration of space in the name of the pursuit of knowledge, at least for now. We’re going to keeping staring into the infinite and wondering whats out there; why should we stop trying to figure it out?
